Perhaps the single most popular and well-known anti-aging treatment out there today, and one that even many people who have never experienced it are familiar with, is Botox injections. Utilized for over 20 years by medical spa professionals to assist with the treatment of wrinkles, fine lines and other forms of aging on the face, Botox is known to be an effective, safe and fast form of skin rejuvenation that can assist a variety of people – and many who aren’t familiar with it become instant fans after their first Botox appointment.
At the offices of Steven Jepson MD, we’re happy to offer the very best in Botox injections and related medical spa services, serving a wide range of clients and their various anti-aging needs in several different ways. Genesis Lifestyle Medical uses Botox for a variety of purposes, from eyebrow or forehead treatments to pouting the bottom lip, lifting the corners of your mouth and several others – and may even also be used for reducing pain and discomfort for conditions like TMJ or migraine headaches.
Are you new to the Botox world and looking to understand how your treatment regimen will go if you choose to obtain Botox injections? Here’s a primer on everything a first-time Botox patient should expect, plus some basics on how to prepare and care for your injection site following treatment.
Firstly, for those who are unaware, let’s actually define Botox: It is a highly purified protein known as botulinum toxin type A. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the face, helping the skin in this area look younger and healthier.
In addition, it can also weaken the muscles around the mouth, eyes and other parts of the face that often lead to wrinkles, crow’s feet or other lines. It’s important to note that Botox does not “paralyze” these muscles permanently or create any kind of a frozen look, so long as it’s injected by a qualified professional like Genesis Lifestyle Medical.
Who It’s Right For
There are some misconceptions about who Botox is ideal for, specifically surrounding the realm of age. For some reason, there are those who believe that only older adults are eligible for Botox or can receive benefits from it – and while it’s true that some older people find great value from Botox, this restriction is absolutely not the case.
Rather, even many people in their 20s and 30s often utilize Botox as a preventive treatment against aging. Anyone dealing with notable physical signs of aging could be a candidate, with a few exceptions based on medical conditions that we’ll go over in just a moment. While Botox is a bit more popular among women than men, men can receive all the same benefits and should not avoid this treatment just because it’s less common among their gender.
What Happens Ahead of Treatment
Before your first Botox treatment, you’ll consult with an injection specialist like Genesis Lifestyle Medical to go over several important pieces of information. One of these will be going over your medical history to confirm you’re a viable candidate – this is because there are a few conditions or situations that might impact treatment, or could even lead to your specialist advising you to wait on Botox injections for some period of time. These situations include:
Medical conditions in the muscles or nerves, or problems with breathing or swallowing.
Certain prescription or over-the-counter medications, or even possibly some herbal supplements or vitamins you’ve been taking recently.
A recent previous facial surgery that may impact Botox injections.
Pregnancy – Botox usually is not recommended for women who are pregnant
Any other conditions that may impact your health – Genesis Lifestyle Medical will inform you of these if necessary.
In addition, this consultation will allow you to ask any questions you may have about the Botox process so you understand precisely how it works. You can discuss your goals for treatment, plan out injection areas and more.
First Botox Appointment
For your first Botox appointment, things will generally be very simple and straightforward. Your specialist will go back over the information you discussed during your consultation, including the planned injection sites and the specific areas of the face you want treated. At this time, the specialist will also mark the targeted area on your face, plus will cleanse it to ensure it’s completely clean.
If you request it, or if your specialist feels there’s a heightened risk of discomfort, they also may apply a topical cream to the injection area to numb it. From here, a small micro-needle will be used to inject Botox directly into the muscles. The whole first appointment should only take about 30 minutes.
Basic Care Areas
Before you leave, your specialist will provide you with some basic instructions for care on your injection areas. The goal here will be to reduce any side effects, such as bruising, swelling or redness. However, because Botox is a no-downtime treatment, there will be no need to take time off work or stop any planned activities, unless they risk direct impact to the face.
