You may have started hearing more and more about Kybella, especially now that TV commercials showing it’s effectiveness have starting running. We anticipate that Kybella is going to be one of the most pursued treatments in the coming years, since few people like their double chin.
What is Kybella you ask? Kybella is a new injectable treatment designed to aid in reducing submental fat or “double chin.” Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used on adults to improve the appearance of mild-moderate fat below the chin.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella injections reduce fat located under your chin. Its active ingredient comes in the form of a deoxycholic acid. The patented formula is derived from the bile acids that occur naturally in our bodies and are intended to breakdown and absorb dietary fat. Deoxycholic acid, in the form of Kybella, is directly injected into under-chin fat, resulting in its permanent destruction. Kybella is selective for fat cells only. Surrounding skin and muscle is not affected
What to Expect
At the time of your treatment, the area under your chin is cleansed and marked. Several small injections are placed 1 centimeter apart just below the skin into the layer of fat underneath. A very small needle is used and the injections feel like only a mild pinprick. A burning sensation follows for about 10-15 minutes but quickly passes. You can expect moderate swelling in the area for about 48 hours after the procedure and mild swelling for another week.
Most people will need at least two to three treatments, and each treatment is usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Are There Any Common Side Effects?
Temporary side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and lumpy areas in the treatment zone. These side effects are usually worse with the first treatment.
